1 dead after fishing boat capsized after being struck by lightning

CORINNE, Box Elder County – One person was killed when a fishing boat was struck by lightning, causing the boat to capsize and throw three people into the Bear River early Sunday.

At approximately 12:10 a.m., officers with the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports that a boat on the Bear River in Corinne had been struck by lightning.

Three people fell into the water when the boat was struck, but only two of them were able to reach shore, a sheriff’s office news release said. The third person went underwater.

Numerous agencies, including the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office, Box Elder County Search and Rescue, Box Elder County Dive Team, Corinne and Brigham City Fire Departments, Utah Parks and Recreation, Coast Guard, and the Department of Public Safety Aero Bureau were called to the scene to assist in the search efforts.

At around 5:30 a.m., the body of the third person was located using sonar and rescue divers, the press release said. The identities of those involved were not disclosed on Sunday.

“We extend our deepest condolences to all those affected by this tragic loss, especially the friends and family of the deceased. We are sincerely grateful to all the professionals and volunteers who invested their time and effort in the search and successful recovery process,” Chief Deputy Sheriff Cade Palmer said in the press release.

The investigation into the death is ongoing.
