1 dead and 1 injured in helicopter crash at military base in Alabama

One person was killed and another was injured in a helicopter crash at a military base in Alabama. The accident occurred during so-called “routine flight training.”

On Wednesday, August 7, at approximately 1:40 p.m. local time, military officials at Ford Novosel Base “were notified of an accident involving an AH-64 Apache helicopter conducting routine flight training at Fort Novosel,” according to a press release from the U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence and Fort Novosel obtained by PEOPLE.

On board the two aircraft were a flight instructor, who died, and a US Army student pilot, who was “flown out in an Army MEDEVAC helicopter for further medical examination,” the press release states.

John Cawley, the Dale County coroner, identified the deceased flight instructor as Daniel Munger, 46, who had retired from the Army as a contract worker, according to the Associated Press.

The identity of the injured student pilot has not yet been disclosed.

“Our primary concern is the well-being and health of the student pilot, as well as the care and concern for the family of the deceased,” said Major General Clair A. Gill, U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence and commanding general of Fort Novosel, in the press release following the fatal crash.

No further details are currently available on the cause of the helicopter crash, but military officials said “the accident is under investigation.”
