1,500 flights canceled in the US as Tropical Storm Debby nears landfall, including 200 in Texas

As Tropical Storm Debby prepared to make landfall on Monday as a Category 1 hurricane with life-threatening storm surge and rainfall amounts of up to 760 millimeters, thousands of flights were affected in the United States.

About 125 miles south of Tampa, Florida, it seemed unlikely until Sunday afternoon that Debby would have a direct impact on Texas – not even remnants of the storm.

But Texans were affected in other ways, too. According to flight tracking website Flight Aware, the storm caused more than 1,500 flight cancellations and 3,000 delays nationwide, including about 200 flights in Texas and dozens more delays at airports in Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio.

Among the major airlines, American Airlines and JetBlue recorded the most cancellations, both canceling 16 percent of their flights.
