2 Solutions to Microsoft Word Not Opening on iPhone and iPad

Quick Tips
  • Go to Settings > Word > Enable Background App Refresh.
  • Go to Settings > Word > Reset Word > Clear Credentials and enable Reset Cloud Settings > Force Quit and Restart Word > sign in to your account again.

Basic bug fixes

  • Check OneDrive storage: All your Word documents are stored on OneDrive, so you’ll need enough free space on your OneDrive account to open the app and work on your files.
  • Force quit and restart: This will restart the app on your iPhone or iPad.
  • Update or reinstall Microsoft Word: Installing the latest version will improve the stability of the app on your device.

Solution 1: Allow app refresh in the background

Background app refresh ensures that you always see the updated version of the app while it’s running in the background, so you’ll need to make sure this has also been enabled for the Microsoft Word app on your iPhone or iPad. The steps remain the same for both platforms.

Open Settings > Word > activate App update in the background.

Solution 2: Reset Microsoft Word app

Once you reset the Word app on your iPhone or iPad, you will be signed out of your Microsoft account. This will also remove the in-app settings and return the app to its default state.

Open Settings > Word > Reset word > activate Delete credentials And Reset cloud settings > force And Relaunch Word > log in again to your account.
