With fall approaching, it’s not just the leaves that start to change color. Fall always brings with it the urge to redecorate, whether that’s changing up your home’s transitional decor or something more drastic, like painting your walls a new color.
But what colors will you bring into your home this season if you’re thinking about making a change? While we’re not sure if there are any interior design trends that go along with the changing seasons. So As Pinterest’s recently released fall trends report proves, there are certain decorating options we’re all thinking about right now. Along with the focus on creating cozy nooks and the emerging obsession with Japanese decor described in this report, there’s a clear color palette emerging that users of the social media platform are looking for.
Pinterest is calling the trend “Serene Hues” — based on some emerging keywords that the site’s users have been searching for in droves. This results in three main color trends — green, blue, and purple — in soft, dreamy hues. Our editors have also seen these colors popping up in interior design projects and new season collections, so these fall predictions certainly line up with the hues we’ll be decorating our homes with for the rest of the year (and into 2025).
We asked them to explain each color trend and how to use it to decorate in a modern way.
1. Green
Ask 100 people in a room to choose the most tranquil color palette and we think the vast majority would choose green. According to Pinterest, searches for “green home decor” have increased 2,670% since May. But from our editors’ perspective, it’s an interior design trend that has continued in homes, albeit with a growing appreciation for “fresher” tones.
“While green home decor is by no means a new trend (and is attractive year-round), we are seeing a trend toward more calming hues like sage and sea foam, which are subtle yet fresh and help create calming, Zen-like spaces,” Life etc.’Emma Breislin, interior designer at s, explains: “To avoid schemes that look too flat and boring, these softer colours are also used alongside more unexpected colours that go with green – think pops of orange and red, which add a splash of energy where the space calls for it.”
These bright greens aren’t the only way this color story is being expressed in decor right now – searches for “forest green house” have also increased by 220% on Pinterest. “Forest green home decor for fall helps create a rich color palette – perfect for cozy spaces that feel warm and inviting,” says Emma. “In particular, I’m thinking of sofas styled with a mix of orange and green throws and cushions, or a green vase filled with autumn branches.”

2. Blue
Light blue was the unexpected color of 2024—a color we’d ruled out for kids’ bedrooms or cornflower blue cottages has found a new, decidedly more modern expression this year. Searches on Pinterest for “blue and cream bedroom” are up 200% and “dusty blue bathroom” are up 120% (though these are perhaps the more traditional incarnations of using these colors).
The big trend our editors are noticing is a color palette that combines the aforementioned bright greens with blue. Yes, searches for a “sage and blue color palette” have increased by a whopping 570%—which answers the question of whether blue and green go together once and for all. “If there was one color combination we’ve seen more often than ever this year, it would be sage and blue. Taken individually, they’ve shaped our post-pandemic decorating habits as we try to create calming spaces that soothe the mind and promote relaxation,” explains Trends Editor Lilith Hudson. “But why have just one when you can have both? Designers are using these harmonious, tranquil hues to create soothing color palettes for fall—a time of year when we retreat and spend more time indoors. A nature-inspired hue like sage brings the outdoors indoors, while blue—depending on the hue used—can either enhance the space or create an autumnal mood. Choose bold blue to add energy to your space, calming grey-blue for a delicate feel, or lush dark navy for coziness,” adds Lilith.

3. Purple
If you thought green and blue were the obvious options for “calm hues,” this latest entry in Pinterest’s fall trend report might surprise you. “The days of purple evoking emotional responses are over—this color is the new favorite among designers and homeowners, and for good reason,” says design editor Aditi Sharma Maheshwari. “When used correctly and in the right tones, purple can add much-needed color to a room and an intensity that few other hues can match.”
Think less of pure purple, which is a mix of primary red and blue, as this color can have a calming effect. It’s the trendy, Gen Z-approved “lavender room aesthetic,” which has seen a 110% year-over-year increase in searches, while searches for “moody purple bedrooms” have increased 350%.
“A moody, dark purple has an inherently cosy feel and is perfect for bedrooms or small lounge areas,” says Aditi. “Shades like aubergine or deep purple look particularly good on walls or as bed tones. And you can always use grey, brown, black or white as colours to match purple to create balance. To enhance the tone even more, use soft bedside lamps and dimmable ceiling lights to make the most of the shade’s impact in the room.”
