Over the past four years, hair color has evolved from boxed hair dye and grown-out roots to a certain degree of normality. Now, experts say the best new hair color ideas you’ll see for the rest of 2024 will trend in one of two directions: either very subtle or jazzed up 10 octaves. There’s nothing in between.

This means there’s something for everyone, whether you’re looking for hair color ideas for dark hair or even hair color ideas for redheads. “A lot of people are trending in a more low-maintenance direction,” celebrity hairstylist Bianca Hillier tells PS. “In the past, people were more concerned with going to the salon and opting for colors that required frequent maintenance over highlights and bases that needed to be tinted frequently. Right now, colors that are extremely low-maintenance are trending.”

The benefit of this approach, she says, is that these lower-maintenance shades “have more depth and muted dimensions for movement.” The downside: It doesn’t satisfy the urge for a major hair change that so many people experience. That’s where the next wave of trends comes in: lighter blondes, copper highlights and bold, one-step colors. We’re talking cherry reds, glossy blacks and, as far as hair color ideas for blondes go, warm, buttery shades.

No matter which camp you belong to, there are tons of hair color ideas for 2024 to look forward to. Below, we’ve asked a handful of pros to analyze each one.
