The Algerian boxer filed a lawsuit after her Olympic victory against hate comments claiming she is not a woman. Khelif’s lawyer Nabil Boudi stated that a formal complaint has been filed against the online harassment. The gold medalist said of her move to file a lawsuit: “Everything that is said about me on social media is immoral. I want to change the minds of people around the world.”

Khelif added: “For eight years, this was my dream and now I am an Olympic champion and a gold medalist,” the interpreter told AP. When asked about the gender-based criticism that has surrounded her in recent days, Khelif said: “It also gives a special touch to my success because of these attacks. We are at the Olympics to perform as athletes and I hope that we will not experience similar attacks in future Olympics.”

The gender-based criticism began after her opponent Carini withdrew from the fight for health reasons and said goodbye crying, “I have never felt a blow like that.”

“I am a woman”: Imane Khelif

While Khelif was one of the two women allowed to compete in the Olympics after being disqualified from the International Boxing Association’s women’s world championship last year, the federation has now barred her from competing. The other athlete was Taiwanese player Li Yu-ting. According to the IBA’s announcement, both players failed the testosterone and gender suitability test. However, Khelif, who was raised as a woman since childhood, said: “I am fully qualified to compete in this competition. I am a woman like any other woman. I was born a woman, I live as a woman and I am qualified,” shortly before winning a gold medal herself.
