Police confirmed that the incident was not a shooting spree. The shopping center was cordoned off for a short time but has since been secured.
Over eight patrol cars were seen near the north entrance of the mall, near the food court. Several more cars were also spotted on the opposite side.
A witness at the scene told a Gazette reporter that he saw a man running from the scene after a loud “bang” sound was heard from the food court, shortly before the 911 call was received by police.
Police are advising the public to keep their distance until further information is available. A PIO from the department will arrive on the scene shortly.
According to police, no suspect is currently in custody. The investigation is ongoing and detectives are working to develop investigative leads, including information on the suspect.
Anyone with information or who witnessed this incident is asked to call 719-444-7000 or Pikes Peak Crime Stoppers.
This incident followed a recent ban on uniformed military personnel in Colorado Springs from entering The Citadel mall. Shortly after the news broke, exceptions were allowed for visits for educational or religious reasons.

Colorado Springs Police spokesman Ira Cronin previously spoke to the Gazette and said that although his department’s data was used by military officials to make decisions, he could not say whether a particular trend contributed to the ban.
Last year on Christmas Eve, three people were shot and one of them, 18-year-old Teryus Thomas, was killed at the mall. The suspected shooter, 22-year-old Josiah Brown, is charged with 11 counts in connection with the shooting.
