Although there is considerable crime in the state, Maine has always been considered a safe place to live.
This is especially true when compared to more urbanized states such as Massachusetts, New York and California.
Maine is a state full of small towns. Even our largest city is no bigger than small towns in other states. For the most part, these towns are filled with honest people who want to be part of a community. They live their lives and care about others. In some ways, Maine is just a big small town of 1.3 million people.
A recent article from WMTW found that Maine had the lowest violent crime rate in the country. In 2022, Maine had just 103.3 violent crimes per 100,000 residents. For comparison, the national average was 380.7 crimes per 100,000 residents.
Still, bad things sometimes happen in Maine.
