Second comic shop, postponed Night Out and Mark’s holiday in the rain

Greetings from Cherry Grove. We took a little vacation this week, so of course there’s a tropical storm rolling through. Today’s Friday Five will be short. I’ve been lazy and this will mostly read like “What I did on my summer vacation,” but we’ve got a few good nuggets.

A second location for the Cabarrus store. Beardy Weirdy’s Comics officially opened a second retail location on August 1st. The new store is located in downtown Kannapolis at the Marketplace on Main.

The address is 118 S. Main St. and it is open seven days a week: Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

“The new space features thousands of comic books as well as retro toys, video games and more,” said owner Chris Rigo.

Beardy Weirdy’s is a staple in the Concord area comics scene with its convention, the Concord Micro-Con at Cabarrus Brewing Co., and its original retail store in Gibson Mill.

“After starting Concord Micro-Con in 2017 and having our original retail space in Concord for half a decade,” Rigo said, “we felt it was time to expand a bit, and downtown Kannapolis has seen such strong positive growth recently. I’m really excited to be a small part of the growth of downtown Kannapolis.”

Beardy Weirdy’s buys collections, so call 704-242-1119 if you have comics, games or toys to sell.

Two years in a row. If there’s ever a drought on the Grand Strand, call the Plemmonses. We can solve the problem.

Last May we came to North Myrtle Beach and it rained like crazy.

It has rained this week and as I write this, Tropical Storm (formerly Hurricane) Debby is passing through.

Don’t worry. Darko comes to the rescue. We are having a great time, especially since my grandson Darko Zed is there with Dayne and Sveta.

The adorable 5-month-old boy looks and acts like Dayne and I. (My English teachers, I think I got that right.) This spells trouble for Sveta, Kim and Jordan.

Go for a few runs. Rain doesn’t stop me from running. I’m used to being drenched in sweat, so a cooler rain or drizzle is welcome.

I walked along the beach once or twice and jogged around the neighborhood a few times.

By chance I met someone from Concord and I know some of our readers know him.

During one of my runs, I strolled over to the Surf Golf & Beach Club and got chatting to one of the guys who worked there. It was Jim Mowrer, a 1967 graduate of Northwest Cabarrus. We had a nice chat.

Mowrer grew up on Winecoff School Road and as a teenager mowed Jay M. Robinson’s lawn just down the street.

Kannapolis National Night Out postponed. Speaking of rain, the city of Kannapolis has postponed its National Night Out festivities. The event will now take place on October 1 from 5-7 p.m. at Veterans Park, 119 N. Main St.

If you live in Kannapolis and have school-age children, you can come to the Kannapolis Police Department between 10 a.m. and noon on August 6 or between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. on August 8 to pick up a free school bag with school supplies. There are a limited number of school bags available and distribution will be on a first-come, first-served basis.
