Dear Annie: Employee sees qualified employees being passed over for promotions. “I have zero respect for my boss”

Dear Annie, There are three finance people in my department. One has a degree in a field other than finance and six years of experience in the field. Another has over 10 years of experience and a degree in accounting. The third has over 30 years of experience and two degrees in accounting. The one with the least education and experience was just promoted ahead of the other two.

One problem is that the boss has a history of favoring her favorites. When the promotion became public, our boss was very uncomfortable having to call us and explain. It was obvious that we were never meant to know. To make matters worse, she lied about it.

She blamed her boss and a recent development at work for our colleague skipping us. In reality, the request had been submitted three months earlier and was not related to additional tasks, she said.

I would like to point out that this person’s last promotion was less than three years ago, and the person who has been here the longest has not had a promotion in 10 years.
I have concerns about working for this person because he favors his superiors, and I’m not sure I’ll make it past my current job. But more importantly right now, I have no respect for my boss because he lies. (We’ve seen evidence of the lie.)

This has really affected morale in our department.
What advice do you have for me? – Lost hope regarding corporate morale

Dear Lost Hope, my advice is that you look for a new job.

If you don’t respect your boss, you have no future there. You won’t be happy there, and I suspect they won’t be happy with you.

It sounds like you’re trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. Try to find a job that makes you feel comfortable.
