Louisiana fried chicken chain expands to Baton Rouge | Business

Southern Classic Chicken will open the first of three locations in Baton Rouge in the next nine months after a local developer purchased a restaurant building on South Sherwood Forest Boulevard.

The Shreveport-based fried chicken chain will move into the space at 3410 S. Sherwood Forest, Donnie Jarreau said. Jarreau’s SSF Holdings LLC purchased the property last week for $550,000 from Giovanni Mucciacciaro Enterprises LLC of Baton Rouge.

Southern Classic plans to open a company-owned restaurant at that location in the next seven to nine months, Jarreau said.

It’s the first of three locations the chain plans to open locally. A site on Florida Boulevard is already under contract and is scheduled to open next year, while the company is also looking for a location on Plank Road.

“It’s good chicken,” Jarreau said. “They’ve been around for 35 years and they’re doing good numbers. They should grow really fast.”

Southern Classic has a limited menu that includes only bone-in chicken and tenders, plus traditional sides like coleslaw, mashed potatoes and gravy and French fries. The restaurant will be open seven days a week, for lunch and dinner only, Jarreau said. Most meals will cost between $5 and $7.

Southern Classic has 17 locations, most of them in north and central Louisiana, but the chain has recently entered the south Louisiana market. Last month, a local franchisee bought property for a restaurant in Lafayette that is scheduled to open later this year, and the chain has New Orleans as a growth target.
