NV Energy extends emergency power outage due to ongoing Gold Ranch fire

6,300 customers are without power as NV Energy’s emergency shutoff remains in effect due to a Red Flag warning for safety reasons.

On Sunday, August 11, at approximately 7:30 p.m., NV Energy initiated an emergency shutdown and deactivated power lines to ensure the safety of emergency responders and prevent secondary ignition from the active Gold Ranch Fire.

Customers should be prepared for an ongoing power outage for public safety reasons. To ensure the safety of NV Energy customers and first responders, power will not be restored to customers today due to a hazard warning and ongoing fire danger.

Customers currently without power should prepare to be without power for the next 24 hours. All customers in Northern Nevada, particularly West Reno, Verdi, and the area surrounding the Gold Ranch Fire, should prepare for further outages.

NV Energy is actively monitoring fire and weather conditions to determine when power can be safely restored to all customers.

Due to the urgency of an emergency power outage, advance notice is not always possible. NV Energy ensures timely notifications through customer-preferred communication methods. NVenergy.com provides outage maps and real-time emergency power outage updates via the AlwaysOn blog.

NV Energy recommends that customers prepare for potential power outages during fire season by updating their contact information in MyAccount, signing up for alerts, and having an emergency plan and emergency kit ready for such events. The company recommends that customers review NV Energy’s power outage preparation tips so they are prepared for future power outages. Customers can use NV Energy’s Power Outage Center to stay up to date on the number of power outages, the causes of the outages, the number of customers affected, and the estimated restoration time.
