Toronto Blue Jays provide updates on numerous injuries to key squad members

The Toronto Blue Jays, heading for an unfortunate last-place finish in the American League East, announced important updates on the injuries to shortstop Bo Bichette and closer Jordan Romano this past weekend.

The following is from MLB.com:

Manager John Schneider said both were making “good progress” but neither had returned to baseball activities.

The Blue Jays will work out a rehab plan before Romano returns to pitching, and he is doing “well” five weeks after his surgery.

The club is confident that Bichette will be able to return to baseball next week.

While nothing is official yet, it seems likely that Bichette will return before the end of the season. It’s more questionable for Romano, who hasn’t appeared in a game since May 29 and will likely require a full rehab program. With fewer than 50 games remaining in the regular season, there may simply not be enough time on the calendar.

Romano, 31, has only appeared in 15 games this season due to various injuries. The latest surgery is to correct an elbow problem. This season, he is 1-2 with eight saves and a 6.59 ERA. Romano is a two-time All-Star who has collected 36 saves in each of the last two years. His contract runs through the 2025 season.

Bichette is also under contract through the 2025 season. He is on the injured list with a calf injury. It’s been a terrible year overall for Bichette, who is hitting just .223 with four home runs and 30 RBIs. There are rumors that the team will trade him in the offseason or at the deadline next year.

The Blue Jays will face the Los Angeles Angels again on Monday night with first pitch at 9:38 p.m. ET.
