SIR #1 Rating

MISTER #1 (written and drawn by Fell Hound, with colors by Eleonora Bruni) will appeal to readers who like a good love story as well as those who love fast-paced action. Avery, a girl from a lower-middle-class family, loves Nico, a girl whose rich parents could easily afford to send her to the prestigious Bridleham Academy. As the issue opens, the two girls, who were deeply in love and inseparable, have been separated for a while now. Avery, desperate to see Nico again, sacrifices everything to be able to visit Bridleham so they can be reunited.

You feel for Avery, who went from being in a committed and loving relationship with Nico to one where she was abandoned and ignored by her without explanation. When they get back together, you realize that the love is still there, but Nico has some dark secrets that she will never reveal to anyone. The scenes between them feel real, you feel their awkwardness, that unease that arises between lovers stumbling over their feelings, and Nico’s regret is felt from the pages. Nico is different now and harbors some dark secrets. Avery soon finds out that Bridleham Academy has secrets too.

After a day of boring lectures and students rushing to class, the eerie underworld of Bridleham Academy comes to life.

You think you’ve seen it all? You haven’t lived until you’ve seen MISTERthe number one sport of this academic underworld. The centerpiece of the issue is the extended motorcycle tournament battle. This competition is called “Seismic Ironclash Roulette” (or SIR for short) and sounds like the most exciting and mysterious thing ever.

Fell Hound’s drawings breathe life into the story throughout the book, but this sequence is particularly emotive and dynamic, with flashes of motorcycles leaping through the air and the fighters brandishing dragon heads with jagged teeth that they can use to punch, jab or grab their opponents. The contestants’ outfits are stunningly designed, a mix of medieval armor and the flashier aspects of the Super Sentai genre. Anyone who is a fan of the Kamen Rider series will love this sequence.

As in any good debut issue, just enough details are revealed about the main characters Avery and Nico to make us love them. Avery’s flashbacks to her and Nico’s time together are touching and her scenes have an elegance that reminded me of the films of Wong Kar Wai, especially In the mood for lovewhere even the most basic elements of the universe want these lovers to be together. Who can resist such a shadowy, beautiful world?

“SIR” #1 delivers a double dose of romance and fast-paced action, combining some truly emotional moments with dazzling “Kamen Rider”-style motorcycle battles.

The character designs are stunning throughout the book.

Avery and Nico are fascinating and their story is truly touching.

Sometimes it feels like the story is moving too quickly. I would have liked to have seen more quiet moments with Avery and Nico before the next scene starts.
