The director of “Folie à Deux” reveals drastic changes from DC Comics with Arthur Fleck

Arthur Fleck changes something and stands by it! The director for Joker: Foil for Two reveals an important point in which his film will differ from the original DC comics.

Joker: Foil for Two follows the continued fall from grace of Arthur Fleck, a clown turned killer, and many fans believe this sequel will only bring the poor man closer to his DC Comics counterpart: the Joker. However, director Todd Phillips doesn’t think Fleck will ever become the true Clown Prince of Crime.

“We would never want him to become the clown prince of crime,” Phillips said in a recent interview with Empire. “Because Arthur is clearly not a criminal mastermind. He never was. Arthur has become this symbol for people.”

“This unwilling, unwitting symbol now has to pay for the crimes of the first film, but at the same time finds the only thing he ever wanted, which is love. That’s always been his thing, even though he’s been pushed and pulled in all sorts of directions. So we tried to make the purest version of that.”

While it’s a shame that fans will never see Arthur Fleck in the iconic purple suit and as a criminal mastermind, it’s understandable that Todd Phillips didn’t want him to become the clown prince of crime. It’s clear that the director is taking a big departure from the original DC comics. Joker: Foil for Twoand this was never more evident than in the film’s musical elements.

Todd Phillips breaks down Joker: Folie à Deux’s Musical Malodies

Just like the DC comics that created the character, director Todd Phillips is not only excited about the idea of making a musical. The director plans to make some interesting changes to the formula Joker: Foil for TwoWhen Joaquin Phoenix talked about this idea, he explained that Arthur Fleck would not sing like a professional in the sequel.

“It was important to mask that with bad phrasing and the occasional wrong note,” Phoenix told Empire. “Arthur grew up listening to his mother play these songs on the radio. He’s not a singer and he wasn’t meant to sound like a professional singer. He was meant to sound like someone who’s in the shower and just starts singing.”

Joaquin Phoenix’s words should at least alleviate some of the fans’ concerns about Joker: Foil for Two. Director Todd Phillips is certainly making a film that no one could have imagined when the Joker first appeared in DC Comics nearly a century ago, but nothing defines Arthur Fleck more than accidentally forging his own path in life.

Joker: Foil for Two will be in theaters on October 4, 2024. Stay tuned for the latest news on the sequel and subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
