Spirit Airlines is facing economic turmoil, according to its latest earnings release on August 1. The airline said it would take cost-control measures, such as pausing the hiring of new pilots and flight attendants and furloughing several hundred pilots.

“Summer demand remains robust and load factors have been strong; however, significant capacity increases in the industry along with additional pricing changes in the competitive environment have made it difficult to grow yields, resulting in disappointing revenue results for the second quarter of 2024,” said Ted Christie, president and CEO of Spirit Airlines, in the press release.

The airline recently announced an overhaul of its fare classes starting August 16, which includes new package offerings such as the “Go Savvy” fare class, which includes one carry-on or checked bag and expanded seat selection.
