A 26-year-old New York man was arrested and charged with shooting his twin sister in Teaneck on Thursday morning, officials said.

Jonathan D. Hagley is charged with murder, possession of a firearm and obstruction of justice, the Bergen County District Attorney’s Office said.

Authorities arrived on Hickory Street in the community around 8:25 a.m. and found a woman named Naomi Hagley who had been shot multiple times inside a home, the district attorney’s office said in a news release. The woman was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead, officials said.

During the investigation, “first responders determined the suspect was a family member who had fled the scene,” prosecutors said. Jonathan Hagley was found several blocks from the house by Bogota police officers, and a handgun with “obliterated serial numbers” was found at the home, officials said.

He was taken to the Bergen County Jail in Hackensack while he awaits his detention hearing.

The prosecutor said Jonathan Hagley was charged with first-degree premeditated murder, second-degree unlawful possession of a handgun, second-degree possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose, second-degree failure to possess weapons or ammunition by certain persons, third-degree possession of a defaced firearm and fourth-degree obstruction of justice.

Detectives from the District Attorney’s Major Crimes Unit, Teaneck Police Department, Bergen County Sheriff’s Department, Bogota Police Department and emergency personnel responded to the scene.

This is the first murder or manslaughter in Teaneck in three years. In June 2021, a 20-year-old township man was charged with murder after shooting another 20-year-old man in Ammann Park, a residential area on Fort Lee Road between Teaneck Road and Lees Avenue. In October 2019, a Bronx man was charged with manslaughter after being accused of attacking his twin babies in Teaneck. He was initially charged with assault, but police upgraded the charges after one of the babies died.
