Centennial Library hosts ‘Paws to Read’ next week – Greeley Tribune

As man’s best friend, dogs are considered to make life a little easier.

The High Plains Library District is putting this call into action for young readers with a monthly event at local libraries. Paws to Read pairs young readers with therapy dogs certified by the Alliance of Therapy Dogs.

The next Paws to Read will be held Monday from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Centennial Library, 2227 23rd Ave., Greeley.

“When children read to the dogs (especially if they don’t like reading), they are more relaxed when they pet the dog or just read to him side by side,” said Katherine Bunker, children’s librarian at Centennial Library, in an email. “The dogs never judge and never correct. Sometimes the children just tell the dogs a story while they look at the pictures. Families often read to the dogs together.”

Readers are encouraged to read to three to four dogs. When they finish, they receive a bookmark with the dog’s picture on it. The library has hosted this event for years and plans to hold it every Monday for the rest of the year.
