Man who fatally shot Syracuse youth football coach acted in self-defense, prosecutor says

Syracuse, NY – A man who fatally shot a youth football coach acted in self-defense, the district attorney said Friday.

Shakur Wingate, 27, is accused of shooting Jamar Mack Sr. with an illegally possessed weapon at about 2:30 a.m. on June 16 at Valley Plaza at 4100 South Salina Street in Syracuse, according to an indictment filed in Onondaga County District Court.

Wingate is charged with second-degree illegal possession of a weapon, but not murder, according to the indictment, which was filed on August 12.

Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick told Syracuse.com | The Post-Standard that a grand jury ruled that Wingate acted in self-defense when he opened fire that night.

According to reports from the Onondaga County Emergency Operations Center, eight gunshots were detected through two ShotSpotter activations.

Another man, Marquis Stanley, was shot that night. Wingate is not accused of shooting Stanley, according to the indictment. Stanley survived the shooting.

Mack was the first of two people shot in Valley Plaza within just two months. A sports bar in the Plaza is now forced to close due to the violence.

Mack had coached the Salt City Renegades travel football team for the past three years. He wanted all of his players to succeed and coached them hard, said a friend of Mack’s. He was also a father of two children.
