RED is enjoying new success on Netflix 14 years after its release. The 2010 action comedy is based on the DC Comics series of the same name and is about Frank Moses, a former black ops agent who reassembles his old team to find out who is behind an attempt on his life. Bruce Wills leads REDThe cast of “The 40 Years of the Year” also includes Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, Helen Mirren, Karl Urban, Mary-Louise Parker, Rebecca Pidgeon, Brian Cox, Richard Dreyfuss, Julian McMahon, Ernest Borgnine and James Remar.

Now, 14 years after its initial release, Willis’ action comic adaptation is enjoying new success on Netflix. RED ranked eighth in the top 10 Netflix movies in the United States for the week of August 5-11In the lower half it ranked between White chicks And Tarot in sixth and seventh place and The Lorax by Dr. Seuss And Emoji – The Movie in the last two places.

After its publication RED was a solid critical and box office success, exceeding expectations and even spawning a sequel. The first film was generally well received by critics, RED Critics pointed out that while the film does not deliver the intense tension one would expect from an action film, it surpasses most of its big-budget competitors with its sharp wit and the distinctive style of director Robert Schwentke. RED received 72% of Rotten Tomatoes ratings from critics and audiences and was even nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, which is a rarity for an action film.

In addition to the critical success, RED was also a solid box office hit, debuting with around $22.5 million on its opening weekend. The film ended its box office run with $90 million in the United States, along with $108.6 million internationally and just under $200 million with a worldwide total of 199 million US dollars on a budget of 58 to 60 million US dollars. This critical and box office success was enough to produce a sequel, albeit a belated one, with RED 2 published nine years later in 2019.

The comic series is being further adapted. RED 2 brings back Frank Moses, who reassembles his old team of agents, this time to track down a missing portable atom bomb. In addition to Willis, Malkovich, Mirren, Parker and Cox also reprised their roles from RED alongside Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta-Jones and David Thewlis joining the cast. Unfortunately, Willis will retire in 2022 due to health reasons. RED 3 is unlikely, although audiences can still enjoy the first two films via streaming on Netflix.
