Beebe starts at center against the Raiders

The Cowboys become rookie Cooper Beebe at center against the Raiders so we’ll see what he can do in that position, something we haven’t seen much of yet.

Dallas’ third-round pick was the Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year in each of his final two seasons at Kansas State, but he was primarily a guard. He occasionally played tackle, but never the center of attention.

Still, when Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy saw Beebe play, he saw him as “a center.”

“So some of these guys, there’s a difference in how they evaluate players from team to team,” McCarthy said. “Maybe not everyone thought he was a center. Maybe some people thought he was a guard. Maybe some people thought he was a right tackle. I don’t know.” But when I saw him play, knowing his personality and the background information from our scouts, I thought he was a natural center.

Beebe immediately threw himself into the task with all his energy. Video clips of him taking snapshots with his mother went viral on the internet and he has already improved greatly over the course of the training camp. In Dallas’ season opener, Beebe split time between center and guard.

“It was definitely a transition,” Beebe said. “OTAs were a pretty good learning experience for me. But now, as I continue to get reps, I feel comfortable now. This is my job. This is the position they want me to be in and I’m going to continue to get better at it.”
