This year’s monsoon has been intense and destructive, causing extensive damage across the state. Tragically, 67 people have lost their lives due to the heavy rains, 29 of these deaths have been due to house collapse. Hence, there is an urgent need for evacuation and rehabilitation of people living in dilapidated houses in both the states.
Precipitation statistics and forecast
From June 1 to August 15, the state received 22% more rainfall than usual. The highest rainfall was recorded in Chamarajanagar, Mandya and Tumkur, while 13 districts received more rainfall than usual, indicating good rainfall across the state.
Positive outlook for
Despite these challenges, the ample rainfall is expected to boost agricultural production. So far, 70 lakh hectares have been sown against the annual target of 82 lakh hectares and the target is expected to be exceeded. Pre-monsoon crops such as urad dal and mung bean are ready for harvest and state water reservoirs are 89% full, ensuring adequate water supply.
