A horror film festival exclusively for women of color – The Nerds of Color

On October 21, 2024 entangle is hosting its third annual International Horror Film Festival for Women of Color at Vidiots in Eagle Rock, California. Considering the horror genre is oversaturated with cis-straight white men, I find a festival like this incredibly promising, and even though it’s only in its third year, the festival is a tremendous need.

Why horror for women of color?

Horror has historically been limited to people of color and women. Films in the horror genre are stereotypical or limited in their portrayal of this group of people. Entertwine’s International Horror Festival is an opportunity to break out of this mold and immerse yourself in a genre that doesn’t usually feature the artistic work of people of color and women in these types of films. This festival aims to show that there are no limitations for women of color.

Originally conceived as a 48-hour film festival, entertwine has expanded its scope to accept completed short films, paying homage to the 48-hour festival’s roots. The 48 Horror Challenge is the festival’s challenge as it revolves around the tight time frame of 48 hours. Participants from all over the world have two days to write, shoot and edit their short film. To ensure a level playing field, participants are given three Easter Eggs to incorporate into the films. The Easter Eggs will be revealed on September 20, 2024.

The top 10 films will be screened at Vidiots in Los Angeles. The best film will receive $500 in cash. The best film shot within 48 hours will receive $250 in cash.

Note: If you have the best film AND it was shot in 48 hours, the total prize money is $750.
