Live updates on Biden’s DNC speech: Joe Biden passes the torch to Kamala Harris on the first day of the Democratic Convention

Kamala Harris makes a surprise appearance on the DNC stage

Joe Biden took the stage at the DNC to pass the torch to Vice President Kamala Harris to thunderous applause.

He was introduced by First Lady Jill Biden and his daughter Ashley Biden.

“Let me ask you, are you ready to vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz?” Biden asked the crowd.

Earlier, Hillary Clinton returned to the Democratic Party Convention on Monday evening, eight years after her nomination in 2016.

In a fiery speech, Clinton said: “My friends, when a barrier falls for one of us, it falls and clears the way for all of us. That’s why we must work harder than ever in the next 78 days.”

Harris made a surprise appearance at the convention before Biden’s speech.

“Joe, thank you for your historic leadership, for your lifelong commitment to our nation, and for all that you will continue to do. We are eternally grateful,” Harris said.

Harris has enjoyed an astonishing surge in popularity since Biden made the historic decision not to seek another term in the White House a month ago following his disastrous performance in the debate against Trump in Atlanta on June 27.

“You can’t just say you love your country when you win,” says Biden

President Joe Biden referred to the January 6 insurrection in his speech at the Democratic National Convention on Monday evening.

“My fellow Americans, nearly four years ago, in winter, on a cold January day on the steps of the Capitol, I raised my right hand and swore an oath to you and to God to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution and to faithfully execute the office of President of the United States,” Biden said. “Before me lay the city, surrounded by the National Guard. Behind me, a capital that had been overrun by a violent mob two weeks earlier. But I knew then, in my heart of hearts… there is no place for political violence in America.”

“You can’t just say you love your country when you win,” he added.

“The original girl father”

Ashley Biden introduced her father at the DNC on Monday night and called him the “Original Girl Dad.”

She told the DNC the story of her eighth birthday, when he took the Amtrak from DC just to sing Happy Birthday to his daughter before returning to Washington.

“When I look at my father, I see grace, strength and humility. I see one of the greatest leaders of all time,” she said.

Who are Joe Biden’s children? Ashley Biden will introduce her father at the DNC

President Joe Biden has four children from two marriages – but only two of his children are still alive.

Biden had three children with his first wife Neilia Biden, whom he married in 1966. In order of birth, they were Joseph Robinette III, known as Beau, Robert Hunter and Naomi Christina, known as Amy.

On December 18, 1972, Neilia was driving with the three children to buy a Christmas tree when their car was struck by a semi-trailer truck. Both Neilia and Naomi Biden were pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. Naomi was just over a year old at the time.

The two boys survived but suffered serious injuries. Less than a month later, on January 3, 1973, Biden was sworn in as a senator in the hospital where his sons were recovering.

First Lady recalls the moment she saw Biden “take everything into his hands” and decide to get out

First Lady Jill Biden began her remarks by pointing out that she has been married to President Joe Biden for nearly half a century.

“There are moments when I fall in love with him all over again,” she said.

She continued to praise him for “all he has accomplished in the name of something greater than himself.”

“Weeks ago … I saw him look deep into his soul and decide not to run for re-election and to support Kamala Harris,” she added.

“Joe Biden helped us get back up”

Delaware Senator Chris Coons took the stage at the DNC to praise his longtime friend, President Joe Biden.

“Joe Biden’s mother had a saying: ‘Courage makes you, loyalty makes you redeemed,'” he began. “Four years ago, I had the honor of introducing Joe Biden at our convention. I spoke about Joe’s faith, his love of family, and his determination to restore the soul of our nation.

“In 2020, America was nearly devastated by a deadly pandemic, an economic collapse, and then in January, an attack on our democracy. All because we were devastated by the drama and chaos of our former president.

“But folks, Joe Biden’s courage, Joe Biden’s faith in us, Joe Biden’s determination to heal the soul of our nation gave us hope and confidence. Joe Biden, who has been knocked down by life himself time and time again, knows the courage and determination of the American people. He believed in us. Joe Biden helped us get back up.”

Warnock calls on Democrats to unite while sharply criticizing Trump

Georgia Senator Raphael Warnock told the DNC that a “vote is a prayer for the world we want for ourselves and our children, and our prayers are stronger when we pray together.”

“Together, we flipped the Senate, held the House, and sent Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to the White House,” he added. “Together, we vaccinated our citizens, strengthened our cities and communities, and stood by our small businesses. Together, we set out to heal the country, a nation ravaged by a deadly pandemic and haunted by the horrific and divisive rhetoric of a man too small for the office entrusted to him.”
