It is officially a brat Summer.

Charli XCX’s latest album is titled brat — which dropped on June 7 — has promptly inspired a color trend that commands attention in a way that spring’s buttery yellow hues just can’t. The album cover’s aggressive neon green background color (overlaid with the word “Brat” in the pop singer’s signature Arial font) is appearing in everything from clothing to food.

The color trend has been around for a while now; Billie Eilish has made lime green roots her trademark for years, while Selena Gomez’s neon green manicure caused a stir on social media in 2021. However, Charli XCX’s highly anticipated sixth studio album has pushed the bold color’s popularity to new heights.

The wearers of the trend are well aware that it is not the most aesthetically pleasing shade of green; that is exactly what it is about. In their interview with Vogue SingaporeThe 31-year-old British pop singer said she deliberately chose an “offensive, unfashionable shade of green to give the impression that something is wrong.”

The inspiration behind the album cover goes hand in hand with the resurgence of the 90s grunge aesthetic. Things that were once considered ugly or unfeminine (e.g. baggy clothes, clunky sneakers and smudgy makeup) are now considered chic again.

Donni Davy, makeup artist, known for her work on HBO’s euphoriacreated two brat-inspired makeup looks in a TikTok shared on Tuesday, July 9. Using products from her makeup line, Half Magic Beauty, Davy used a bright green pigment to create bold, winged eyeliner (which matched her neon green nails).

TikTok user Maddy Crum also shared a brave, brat green makeup look for her nearly 886,000 followers, who praised her interpretation.
