Democratic Convention and Local Election Campaign: Down in Alabama

Democratic Convention and Local Election Campaign: Down in Alabama

DNC and Alabama 2

The Democratic Party Convention began on Monday evening.

The big evening is on Thursday evening: Vice President Kamala Harris gives her speech and accepts the nomination for the presidency.

Also scheduled for Thursday night is a speech by Shomari Figures, reports Mike Cason of AL.com. Figures is the Democrat in the race for Alabama’s newly redrawn 2nd Congressional District. That shouldn’t be a big surprise: The court ordered the district to be drawn to give Democrats the upper hand, and it’s that party’s first chance in a long time to hold two congressional seats in Alabama, so they’d like to see Figures get the support.

Personalities who worked in the Obama administration and in the Justice Department under President Biden. He is from Mobile. In the general election, he is running against Montgomery attorney Caroleene Dobson.

We’ve talked here before about how the presidential race might affect the 2nd District, and numbers suggest that Harris being a black woman helps his campaign.

“I think it means a lot that she is at the top of the ballot in this district, the birthplace of the civil rights movement, given the role that black women played in the civil rights movement.”

Risky business

Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall said gambling establishments in Selma must be closed, AL.com’s Carol Robinson reports.

A Dallas County district judge has granted the attorney general’s request for temporary restraining orders against five establishments – Joker 777 on East Highland Avenue, Mini Bingo on Dallas Avenue, Selma Charity Bingo on Highway 14 East, Selma Bingo on Hickory Road and Lucky Duck on Highway 80 West.

Search warrants were executed at these locations and the state alleges that slot machines and illegal gambling are taking place there. Authorities reported 24 slot machines at Mini Bingo alone.

A place for fishing

The Gulf State Park Pier finally reopened at 7 a.m. Monday morning, reports Lawrence Specker of AL.com.

Dozens lined up to cast a line as the pier fully reopened for the first time in years. A grand opening was planned for September 16, 2020, to celebrate multimillion-dollar improvements. And that’s when Hurricane Sally hit the coast.

Part of the pier has been open for a while, but major repairs have been underway since last November. Waiting for FEMA funding and rising construction costs delayed the project.

The pier is now nearly 1,600 feet long and has a large octagonal platform at the end. Plans also include adding an elevator for ADA-approved access to the second-floor observation deck.

Once that’s done, they can finally celebrate the ceremonial ribbon cutting.

Quote

“For me, the ultimate goal is to share my inner life and test the connection I have with everyone else, with strangers. And to do that, you have to tell the truth and be honest about your feelings. And if it turns some people off – I’m telling you, this may not sound like the truth here, but it is – if it turns people off, I want them to leave.”

Musician and native of Green Hill Jason Isbellwho appeared at the Democratic National Convention on Monday night, when asked whether his outspoken liberal views might alienate some fans.
