Toronto Blue Jays shortstop takes important step in injury rehabilitation this week

The Toronto Blue Jays had to play virtually the entire second half of the season without superstar shortstop Bo Bichette, but hope that will change soon.

Bichette, who was sidelined with a calf injury, is expected to take a big step toward returning this week.

Per Keegan Matheson of MLB.com on social media:

The #BlueJays expect Bo Bichette (calf) to start walking in the next 2-3 days, says John Schneider, who is already doing some hitting and defensive drills in Dunedin.

Given the length of his absence, Bichette will require some rehab before returning, but there is hope he can play for most or all of September.

It’s been an incredibly bad year for the usually reliable Bichette. He has a batting average of just .223 with four home runs this season and has been unable to protect Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the lineup. All of this will make for an exciting offseason for Toronto.

Reports on Sunday suggested the Blue Jays would consider trade offers for Bichette in the offseason, but given his current season, the team could offer him at a low price. Perhaps they’ll keep him and try to offload him at the trade deadline next year after he rebuilds his value.

The Blue Jays lost the opening game of their series against the Cincinnati Reds 6-3 at the Rogers Centre on Monday night. They are now 58-67 on the year. They are in last place in the American League East, a big departure from their playoff appearances the past two years.
