Will this gold stay?
A supposedly new color is to be introduced in the iPhone 16 Pro series, but the innovation has met with criticism from consumers.
The rumored bronze shade – called “Desert Titanium” – is expected to replace the previously offered Blue Titanium as the fourth available color for the highly anticipated iPhone 16 Pro, which is expected to launch this fall.
Leaker Sonny Dickson posted an image on X last week showing the four possible color variants of the iPhone 16 Pro, including the gold version. Another well-known leaker, Majin Bu, also posted a snapshot of the alleged edges of the iPhone 16 Pro’s camera lens just a few days later, with one set appearing to be dark gold rather than the previously rumored rose gold.
“The iPhone 16 Pro lineup comes in four colors in total: white, black, gold and gray,” the user wrote. “The desert titanium color is a kind of dark gold, similar to the old purple color, relatively discreet and deep.”
Although Apple is known to release a new color for its latest iPhone Pro models, Digital Trends writer Christine Romero-Chan called the bronze shade the “worst iPhone color” she’s ever seen.
“I really hope what we see in the dummy photo is not what we actually get because, to put it nicely, it looks hideous,” she wrote, adding that she hopes the leak is “fake.”
Apple customers complained about the supposedly new color in the comments on a recent TikTok from Tom’s Guide.
“Ugh,” someone simply said.
“Earwax is gold,” joked another.
“This color SUCKS,” complained one user.
“It’s fucking brown,” wrote someone else.
As with any new Apple product, rumors have been circulating about the upcoming iPhone 16 models and the subsequent release of iOS 18.
CNET reports that there are rumors of larger screens on the Pro models, new camera features, and improved processor chips.
Most notably, Apple announced that it plans to release “Apple Intelligence,” the tech giant’s own AI software based on OpenAI, on its devices that is designed to improve Siri, Messages, Photos, and other features. However, some features may reportedly be behind a paywall.
The new operating system is also said to feature “distraction control” that will allow users to remove unwanted advertisements and pop-ups that disrupt their browsing experience.
