According to a new report, President Biden has signed a top-secret plan that reorients America’s nuclear strategy toward China as a nuclear threat – and prepares it for the possibility that the communist country could ally with North Korea and Russia against the United States.
Biden made this change of course in March because the Pentagon believes China’s nuclear arsenal can compete with that of the United States and Russia, the New York Times reported on Tuesday, citing sources.
The new strategy is called “Nuclear Employment Guidance” and also prepares the US for a possible coordinated threat between China, Russia and North Korea, the newspaper reported.
Two high-ranking government officials have recently highlighted the growing nuclear threat posed by China in two speeches.
“The President recently issued updated guidelines on the use of nuclear weapons to reflect the variety of nuclear-armed adversaries, particularly the significant increase in the size and diversity of the (Chinese) nuclear arsenal,” Vipin Narang said this month when he was still acting undersecretary of defense and space policy.
“My office has begun providing the Department and the joint force with updated implementation guidelines for planning and posture of our forces in this new environment.”
In his speech, he also added that the US hoped for China to act “responsibly” on nuclear issues, including transparency and risk minimization, issues that Washington officials have repeatedly raised with their rival.
Pranay Vaddi, the National Security Council’s senior director for arms control and non-proliferation, also referred to the top-secret document in June, the Times reported.
The new game plan will focus on “the need to deter Russia, (China) and North Korea simultaneously,” he said, according to the newspaper.
