TIFF honors Jharrel Jerome and Zhao Tao

Award-winning actor and rapper Jharrel Jerome and award-winning actor Zhao Tao were honored with the Toronto International Film Festival Tribute Award.

Jerome receives the TIFF Tribute Performer Award, while Tao receives the TIFF Special Tribute Award.

Jerome, star of “Moonlight” and “When They See Us,” will return to the festival for the premiere of William Goldenberg’s “Unstoppable: The Anthony Robles Story,” in which he will play Robles. Tao was ranked No. 8 of The New York Times’ 25 Greatest Actors of the 21st Century in 2020. Her collaborations with director Jia Zhang-Ke have produced acclaimed films such as “Still Life” and “Mountains May Depart” (TIFF’ 15). She returns to the festival for the North American premiere of “Caught by the Tides,” where she takes center stage with her portrayal of Qiaoqiao.

“From ‘Moonlight’ to ‘Unstoppable,’ Jharrel Jerome’s depth, strength and vulnerability on screen have made him one of the finest actors of his generation. It is an honor to recognize his outstanding work with the TIFF Tribute Performer Award,” said Cameron Bailey, CEO of TIFF, in a statement. “In her collaboration with director Jia Zhang-Ke, TIFF Special Tribute winner Zhao Tao has captured the complexity and significance of China’s electrifying transformation. She is a striking face of our 21st century, and her work in ‘Caught by the Tides’ is among her finest.”

The TIFF Tribute Awards gala will take place on September 8th at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel.

Benj Pasek, Justin Paul and Jeff Beal receive the Ambassador Award from the Society of Composers and Lyricists

The Society of Composers and Lyricists has named Benj Pasek, Justin Paul and Jeff Beal as recipients of SCL’s prestigious Ambassador Award.

Songwriting duo Pasek and Paul have collaborated to compose the music for “La La Land,” “Greatest Showman” and “Dear Eva Hansen.” Beal has composed the music for “Pollock,” “House of Cards” and “Monk.”

Previous winners of the SCL Ambassador Award include Dave Grusin, Wayne Kirkpatrick, Thomas Newman, Burt Bacharach, David Shire, Marcelo Zarvos, Johnny Mandel, Earl Hagen, James Newton Howard, Leiber and Stoller, Alan Silvestri, Randy Newman and Hal David.

“The Ambassador Award was created to recognize and honor music creators who have made significant and valuable contributions to our profession and our music community,” said Ashley Irwin, president of SCL, in a statement. “Their accomplishments will serve as the ultimate benchmark for future generations of media composers and songwriters.”

The Ambassador Award winners will receive their respective awards at the SCL New York Holiday Party on December 4.

American Society of Cinematographers publishes criteria for outstanding achievements and hosts a gala on February 23

The American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) will host its Outstanding Achievement Awards on February 23, recognizing the work of cinematographers who have excelled in the art and craft of visual storytelling.

In addition to the gala date, the ASC has also released the awards schedule, which you can read below: Feature films must have a release date between January 1 and December 31, with a submission deadline of December 3.

For all TV categories, a show must air or stream between December 1 and November 30, with a submission deadline of November 15. Eligible documentaries must be released or aired between December 1 and November 30, with a submission deadline of October 31. To be eligible for the Music Video Award, the video must be released between October 1 and October 31, with a submission deadline of October 31. Finally, the ASC also gives out a Spotlight Award. ASC members nominate and vote on the winners in this category.

Submissions for all categories begin September 16. You can read the full eligibility criteria here. The gala, which will be streamed live worldwide, will take place at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills.

Casting Society Announces 2024-2025 Board of Directors and Date and Venue of 40th Artios Awards

The Casting Society has announced its new board of directors for 2024-2025 and named the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills as the venue for the 40th Artios Awards, to be held on February 12, 2025. The current board members will continue in office until the end of their two-year terms in June 2025.

“I am honored to continue my role as President of the CSA, especially as we prepare to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Artios Awards, a wonderful milestone in our ongoing mission to support and spotlight the contributions of casting professionals worldwide,” said Destiny Lilly, Acting President of the CSA. “Our postponement to the February ceremony date allows us to position the nominees and winners as influential precursors to the Academy Awards, where casting will debut as an award in 2026.”

Date set for the Costume Designer Guild Awards

The 27th Costume Designer Guild Awards will be held on February 6, 2025, at the Ebell in Los Angeles. The guild has also announced the nominations schedule, which will be announced on December 13.

Submissions, nominations and final voting are all done online. Forms, rules and guidelines are posted in the awards section of the CDG website.
