An accident on State Highway 4 in Hercules closed eastbound lanes at the start of the afternoon rush hour on Tuesday and cut off power to several dozen homes.

The California Highway Patrol reported the accident west of the Franklin Canyon Golf Course around 2 p.m.

The single-vehicle crash knocked down a power pole and blocked both eastbound lanes of Highway 4, the CHP said. Pacific Gas and Electric reported that power went out at the golf course and at a Phillips 66 carbon-fired power plant, as well as other nearby areas, around the same time, according to the utility’s outage map.

As of 6:14 p.m., there was still no estimated time for the eastbound lanes to reopen. The Sycamore ramp to Highway 4 from eastbound Highway 80 was closed, as was the connector ramp from Highway 80 to Highway 4.

Motorists were advised to expect delays and use alternative routes.

This is a breaking news story. More information will be added as it becomes available.
