DNC portrays Harris as standard-bearer of “law and order” as past comments on “militarization of police” resurface

In the video introduction to Democratic Representative Jamie Raskin of Maryland’s speech on Monday evening at the Democratic National Convention, a parody of an introductory commentary from “Law & Order” was broadcast.

“In the criminal justice system, people are represented by two distinct but equally important groups: the police, who investigate crimes, and the prosecutors, who prosecute perpetrators,” said the commentary, which was similar to the NBC Standard.

As the video continued, former President Trump was portrayed as the defendant on the show. The narrator said, “He lies, he cheats workers, he sexually abuses women.”

“To take on this case, we need a president who has spent her life pursuing perpetrators like Donald Trump,” the narrative continues, clearly referring to Vice President Kamala Harris.

Harris recently portrayed her opponent in a similar light: “I know Donald Trump’s type.”

Before her time in the Senate, she served as Attorney General of California and District Attorney of San Francisco. Notably, she won the election for Attorney General by the narrowest margin in state history.

In 2009, Harris wrote a book called Smart on Crime, in which he aimed to “make the criminal justice system tougher in reality, not just in rhetoric.”

In the meantime, she has repeatedly expressed criticism of the state of law enforcement and has been criticized by Republicans, among other things, for raising donations for the Minnesota Freedom Fund, which paid bail for suspects in the Minneapolis riots.

During a June 2019 presidential candidate forum hosted by the Poor People’s Campaign (PPC), Harris joined Mayor Wayne Messam of Hialeah, Fla., and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., on a panel moderated by Liz Theoharis of the PPC and MSNBC commentator Joy Reid.

In response to a multifaceted question from Theoharis, Harris said, “On the issue of militarizing the police, I have long held the view that we need to demilitarize the police and that we really need to get to a point where communities, frankly, don’t need a police response to what’s happening in them because they’re safe communities.”

CNN and other networks recently highlighted Harris’ past statements on policing when the left-leaning broadcaster revisited her June 2020 comments on a New York radio show in which she said the Defund the Police movement “was right to say we need to look at these budgets and find out if they reflect the right priorities.”

The Democrat also said some municipalities were “militarizing” their police while “defunding public schools.”

In 2020, there was a dispute with then-“View” host Meghan McCain after the Republican scion asked the future vice president whether she supported “defunding the police.”

Harris responded by asking how McCain would define defunding the police, while suggesting that the U.S. needs to “rethink how we achieve public safety.”

“And there are cities where a third of the entire budget goes to policing, but there is a desperate need for mental health resources, for public school resources, for job training and job creation. So here we go.”

During a discussion with celebrities Andy Cohen and Laverne Cox in 2020, Harris said the “status quo thinking” that more cops on the streets would lead to safer streets was wrong.

“It’s outdated and actually wrong and backwards to think that more cops will make for more safety,” she added on an episode of Chris Hayes’ MSNBC program.

Fox News Digital reached out to the Harris team for comment but did not receive a response by press time.
