Myanmar resistance released political prisoners when Depayin was captured

Anti-junta resistance forces commanded by the National Unity Government (NUG) released political prisoners from junta custody last week as part of a campaign to retake the town of Depayin in Sagaing region, NUG spokesmen said.

According to a press release issued on Tuesday by the NUG Military Region 1 Command, resistance fighters rescued prisoners from a police station in Depayin as part of an offensive launched on August 15 to take the city.

The fighters were members of the People’s Defense Forces under the command of the NUG’s Defense Ministry, a shadow cabinet formed and supported by elected civilian leaders and members of parliament who were overthrown in the 2021 military coup.

On the morning of 18 August, NUG-commanded forces launched attacks that captured Depayin, located about 65 kilometres north of the headquarters of the Myanmar Army’s Northwestern Regional Military Command in the Sagaing region. . .
