The review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes wants to put an end to “review bombing” with the new designation “Verified Hot”

The review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes has changed its rating system.

Where there used to be a critics’ score based on the average of professional reviewers’ opinions on a film or television show, as well as an audience score, the latter is now replaced by the term “Verified Hot.”

A cinema-goer’s rating will only be taken into account if it can be proven that he or she has purchased a ticket for the respective film – currently only through the partner company Fandango.

However, the term “Verified Hot” could also be used to show how audiences react to so-called “critic-proof” films – that is, films that audiences love but professional critics may not, such as Fast and Furious Movies.

The system could also counteract so-called “review bombing,” the denigration of films they have not seen.

“At Rotten Tomatoes, fans love to consult our verified audience scores in addition to the Tomatometer critics’ scores when discovering new movies and deciding what to watch next,” said Amanda NorvellSVP of Direct-to-Consumer Services at Fandango.

She continues, “With the inclusion of Verified Hot, we are excited to celebrate and spotlight the films that have been unanimously embraced by fans who have taken the time to share their incredible cinematic experience with other fans.”

Rotten Tomatoes also announced that the summer hits Bad Boys: Ride or Die, Deadpool and Wolverine, Fly with me to the moon, Inside Out 2, Twisters And It ends with us are the first films to receive the new name.

In addition, the company is adding the badge to more than 200 films retroactively since May 2019.
