Who are the Blue Angels at the Cleveland National Air Show? (Quiz)

Every Labor Day for 60 years, numerous aircraft have flooded the downtown lakefront for the annual Cleveland National Air Show. From new military jets and decades-old work aircraft to commercial airliners and rescue helicopters, the Cleveland Air Show features appearances from a variety of professionals and vehicles.

Each year, the event draws hundreds of thousands of visitors to the shores of Lake Erie, not counting the countless Cleveland residents who can watch the flight displays from their local beaches, parks, or even their own front yards.

If you drive by Burke Lakefront Airport today, you’ll see that preparations for the annual event are already in full swing. Before the pilots show up, organizers will be busy setting up the grandstands, boxes and loge along the airport runway.

On the ground, there will be various attractions, such as cockpit tours, a 3-D naval experience and U.S. Army career tables. While this event is in part about admiring the scientific achievement of aviation, it is first and foremost a military event. The Cleveland National Air Show’s official website states: “The Air Show is Largest military event in Northeast Ohio and all branches of the armed forces are invited to participate and showcase to a wide audience the quality of personnel, equipment and capabilities offered by today’s U.S. military service.”

No military event would be complete without veterans and active duty soldiers. In fact, many of the pilots who participate in Labor Day demonstrations are military personnel. Most notable are the legendary Blue Angels, a team made up of a specific branch of the military.
