Storm Lilian causes power outages and travel delays

Thousands of households in the northwest are without power and travel is affected by Storm Lilian.

As Electricity North West reported, power outages are currently occurring across Lancashire, Greater Manchester and Cheshire.

Around 1,000 households are without power in Lancashire, and hundreds are affected in Greater Manchester and Cheshire.

The storm has also caused significant disruption to the road and public transport network, with numerous Manchester Metrolink lines closed.

The Bee Network has warned of disruption due to the severe weather and reported that numerous trees have fallen in the Manchester area, including in Piccadilly.

A Transport for Greater Manchester spokesman said: “Strong winds from Storm Lillian are causing disruption to the transport network this morning.

“The storm caused numerous trees to fall across the Metrolink network, resulting in the suspension of many lines. We are working to reopen all lines as quickly as possible.”

TfGM urges anyone planning to travel on Friday to check before departure.

“There is also disruption on the roads affecting some Bee Network bus services and disruption to rail services,” the TfGM spokesman added.

The only Metrolink services currently scheduled to operate are from Rochdale town centre to Victoria Station, Manchester Airport to Sale Water Park, Trafford Centre to Deansgate Castlefield, Eccles to Cornbrook, Piccadilly to Old Trafford and Velopark to MediaCityUK.
