Utica elementary school principal murdered by boyfriend, officials say

Utica, NY – The principal of a Utica elementary school was murdered by her boyfriend, Oneida County sheriff’s officials said Thursday.

Elizabeth A. Gerling, 50, of Marcy, was found dead in her bed at her home at 9111 Birch Circle on Tuesday, officials said. The medical examiner ruled her death caused by strangulation.

Gerling was principal of Columbus Elementary School in Utica.

“Ms. Gerling was not only an exceptional educator and leader, but also a dear friend and colleague to many,” wrote Christopher Spence, superintendent of Utica schools, in a letter to the district community. “Her dedication to education and tireless commitment to our students will not be forgotten.”

Gerling’s boyfriend, Jeremy J. Kirch, 45, of Camden, was arrested in connection with her death, officials said.

Officials determined that Kirch had been in her home the night before her death. He was then found by Roman police and taken for a psychiatric evaluation. Kirch had previously been seen walking around Rome naked, officials confirmed.

Officers went to the hospital, spoke with Kirch and then took him into custody for further questioning, officials said. He was later charged with first-degree murder and is currently being held without bail in the Oneida County Jail, officials said.
