Marvel’s Silver Age Fantastic Four and Doctor Doom comics to be auctioned

Heritage Auctions offers collectors some of Marvel’s most valuable comics, including the 1961 issue of Fantastic Four #1, which ushered Marvel Comics into the Silver Age. Other offerings include Doctor Doom’s first solo title.




Heritage Auctions’ Comics & Comic Art Signature Auction will take place September 12-15, and the company boasts that bidders will hear the phrase “Nobody is better” nearly 200 times during the auctions. The phrase refers to the best of the best and signals the highest rating a comic book issue can receive. The auction includes the first book of the Silver Age, The Fantastic Four #1, with an impressive 9.6 Near Mint grade – one of only two examples to receive such a high grade. Another highlight of the auction is one of five examples graded CGC NM/MT 9.8 for Marvel Superheroes #20, the 1969 book in which Doctor Doom makes his solo debut. Other lots include a copy of the 1928 magazine that introduced Buck Rogers and a bestselling Marvel comic starring the rock band KISS.

The highly valued comics are expected to fetch very high prices at auction. Heritage points out that an earlier edition of The Fantastic Four #1, with a grade of just 9.2, sold for $1.5 million in 2022. “Most copies of this Marvel landmark didn’t look so clean and crisp, so impressively flawless, when they rolled off the press 63 years ago, fell off the dealers’ trucks, and landed on newsstands. It’s the Silver Age dipped in platinum, a sound-sealed time machine, coming to auction for the first time,” the auction house said, adding, “In more than two decades as the world’s leading comic book auction house, Heritage has never offered such a highly graded – and coveted – copy of the first comic book. Fantastic Four like this one.”


Rare X-Men and Spider-Man comics will also be auctioned

Heritage Auction will also be auctioning several other rare Marvel titles during the event, including John Buscema’s original illustrations from the first issue of “The wolverinethe first solo series with Logan. Deadpool is also part of the auction alongside Wolverine and other X-Men and was drawn by Deadpool’s co-creator Rob Liefeld for an alternate cover for the 2021 issue. X-Men #1.

The auction also includes the book that introduced Spider-Man after the first fight of the Fantastic Four: 1962 Amazing imagination #15 with a grade of Very Fine/Near Mint (9.0). The auction house also expects the world’s best example of Marvel Comics Super Special #1 – starring KISS and rated 9.9 – is expected to bring in a five-figure sum.
