7 dead and 12 injured in hotel fire in South Korea; power outage to blame

The fire department confirmed that no sprinklers were installed in the rooms of the hotel, which was built in 2003. The building was not subject to the 2017 ordinance that requires sprinklers in newly constructed buildings over six stories. Unlike some medical facilities, they do not have to be retrofitted in older buildings. The lack of this safety measure likely contributed to the high number of casualties in the incident, the fire department said.

The injured, three of whom are in serious condition, are being treated at various hospitals, including Bucheon Hospital of Soonchunhyang University.

Interior Minister Lee Sang-min visited the fire scene on Friday morning to assess the situation and monitor rescue operations. He urged the fire service to continue to focus all its efforts on fighting the fire and rescuing people. Lee said, “The fire service and local authorities must use all available forces and equipment to fully focus on firefighting and rescue operations,” and urged them to pay special attention to the safety of rescue teams.

Authorities are continuing their investigations to determine the exact origin and cause of the fire. Joint inspections with related agencies are planned to assess the damage and prevent future incidents.
