Flight carrying players and members of the Carolina Panthers leaves runway at Charlotte Airport

A Delta Airlines plane carrying players and members of the Carolina Panthers organization skidded off the runway shortly after landing at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

The incident occurred at 2:35 a.m. on Friday morning. Delta flight 8860 departed Rhode Island TF Green International Airport vicinity Providence at midnight after the PantingHer team had lost 17-3 to the New England Patriots in their first warm-up game hours earlier.

According to WCNC, rescue crews were waiting for the plane after it veered off the runway and landed in the mud. Part of the landing gear also landed off the runway.

“The right main landing gear of Delta 8860 departed the taxiway at Charlotte Douglas International Airport following a normal landing,” Delta said in a statement. “No injuries were reported among the 188 passengers who deplaned from the aircraft and were bused to the terminal. We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience.”

The Panthers are coming off a 2-15 season, the worst record in the NFL. They will open the 2024 regular season on the road against the New Orleans Saints on September 8.
