CHAPEL HILL, NC – Volleyball is back!


The Carolina volleyball team will host its annual Blue & White Scrimmage this Friday, August 23rd at 7 p.m. at Carmichael Arena. Like all regular season home games, Friday’s game is free and open to the public.


The team’s in-house practice game offers Tar Heel fans a first look at the 2024 team under the second-year head coach Mike SchallThe team has been training since August 8th.

This year’s squad, which consists of 17 players, includes seven new faces, including three absolute newcomers and four transfer players:

  • Erin Curtisa freshman from Los Altos, California, who will wear number 4.
  • Julia Bohlingera first-year defensive specialist from Windsor, Colorado, who will wear number 6
  • Peyman Yardimcian experienced opponent from Istanbul, Türkiye, who transferred from Miami and will wear number 11.
  • Alexis Engelbrechta middle blocker from Durham, NC who transferred from Iowa State and will wear number 12.
  • Jackie Taylora first-year middle blocker from Miami, Florida, who will wear number 21
  • Taylor Eiserta graduate of the setter from Louisville, Kentucky, who will wear number 23
  • Chelsea Thorpea redshirt sophomore from Chicago, Ill., who transferred from Ohio State and will wear number 77

Thorpe, Engelbrecht and Yardimci have all been on campus since January, training with the team.


The Tar Heels also return six players who started at least five times last season: Zoe Behrendtqualified outside attacker Emani’ FosterSecond-year outside attacker Safi HamptonYoung libero Maddy MayJunior middle blocker Sadie Swift and experienced outside attacker Mabrey Shaffmaster.


Shaffmaster, a three-time All-ACC and All-Region selection, enters her final season with 1,160 career kills, the thirteenth-most in program history.

For the first time since 2019, the Tar Heels will open the season at home. Carolina opens its home tournament on August 30 at 6 p.m. at Carmichael Arena against Cleveland State.
