Jansen plays for the Blue Jays and the Red Sox in the same game

Danny Jansen will become the first player in MLB history to play for two teams in the same game on Monday.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora confirmed Friday that Jansen – who joined Boston in July via a trade from Toronto – will watch the remainder of a suspended June 26 game between the two clubs, giving him a special place in MLB history.

This is how the situation will develop:

Jansen, who was batting with the Blue Jays trailing 0-1 at the time of the rain delay that halted play, must be replaced by a pinch hitter.

However, since the then Red Sox catcher Reese McGuire is no longer on Boston’s active roster, Jansen will replace him behind the plate.

Jansen will not bat or catch for the Blue Jays on Monday when suspended play resumes, but he will be listed on the scoreboard as a starter for the game against Toronto, meaning he will be considered a player for both teams in the same game.

This scenario has not occurred since the MLB was founded in 1903.

The Blue Jays will have to make some more changes to their lineup, as Bo Bichette is currently on the injured list with a calf strain and Justin Turner, Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Kevin Kiermaier have all been traded.

Boston, meanwhile, must replace Dominic Smith (who was released by the club on Tuesday) and Enmanuel Valdez (currently playing in Triple-A) in its lineup with players who are currently on the club’s active roster.

The June 26th content was interrupted with the score at 0-0 and one out at the top of the second inning.
