The University of Georgia will begin construction on a new 125,000-square-foot freshman dormitory in late September, according to a report from the University System of Georgia.
The dorm building, currently called Building 2266, will accommodate 565 students, helping to meet increased housing needs following recent enrollment increases. According to a statement from UGA, the number of first-year students has increased from fewer than 5,500 in fall 2019 to more than 6,175 students in fall 2024.
The dorm building will be constructed at the intersection of South Lumpkin and Wray Streets near Morris Hall on land currently used as a parking lot. The building’s structure, floor plan, and amenities will be similar to the design of Black-Diallo-Miller Hall.
The new dorm is scheduled to be completed in July 2026, in time for the 2026-2027 school year. The cost is estimated at $72 million, making it one of the most expensive construction projects on campus.
Construction of the residence hall is part of a plan that also includes the new proposed dining, learning and wellness center, which will be located at the intersection of University Court and East Cloverhurst Avenue.
These new buildings will be constructed in conjunction with plans for a new parking deck to accommodate increasing enrollment.
