New Jersey lawmakers call for hearings on power cable

26 August 2024

Tom’s River, New Jersey — Senator Jim Holzapfel, Representative Greg McGuckin and Representative Paul Kanitra (R-10) have called for House hearings on a proposal to run high-risk power cables through densely populated residential streets in Ocean County.

These cables would power a potential offshore wind turbine project, a central component of Governor Phil Murphy’s energy master plan.

Lawmakers raised significant concerns about the potential risks of the project, which they say is being pushed forward without sufficient consideration of its impact on local communities. “Governor Murphy is pushing through his reckless energy master plan with no regard for our communities and no regard for the cost, just to get his name in the headlines for making New Jersey the California of the East Coast,” the 10th Legislative District delegation said.

The delegation stressed that a cautious approach is needed, especially when such projects cross residential areas. “These projects carry high risks and when they are residential areas, we need to go slower and do our due diligence to understand all the impacts, potential hazards and unintended consequences before we start construction,” they explained.
