The old Marion Hotel in Ocala, Florida, gets new life

play

Local investor David Midgett is taking on a huge project and renovating the historic Marion Hotel, which will now be called the Hotel Marion.

The Marion Hotel is designed in the style of Spanish colonial architecture and is a listed building. The Marion Hotel was built in 1927. In 1925, stock certificates were sold to raise money for the construction of the seven-story hotel, which opened in March 1927 with 100 rooms.

The 95-year-old building at 108 N. Magnolia Ave. in downtown Ocala has already been gutted and is set to be restored from office and condominium space to its former glory as a boutique hotel by Midgett, a local philanthropist and developer.

Barry Eady, project manager at Collage Companies, says the ground floor will house an upscale restaurant and cigar bar. Construction workers recently finished applying the approved finish to the exterior facade, while other workers sanded and stripped windows and window frames.

An extension will be built on the west side of the building at a later date, Eady said.

The project envisages the creation of 58 rooms. The hotel is scheduled to be completed by December 2025.
