Detective Comics #1088 review

Ram Vs Epic Detective comics The race ends this week with Detective comics #1088. It’s a story where Batman dies and returns to Gotham and now takes back his city. Gotham Nights: Act III, Finale Part 1 feels like a true epic, with multiple characters and a team of Batman, allies and even enemies. The Orgham family must be robbed, but is that even possible?

Detective comics #1088 opens with a madwoman sending a broadcast to the people of Gotham, and she’s completely insane. While Nightwing and Azrael give the Orghams the edge, their public image suffers. It seems the other blow has fallen, and the once not-so-fair fight is tipping in Batman’s favor, giving him the edge.

One of the more interesting scenes involves the Ten-Eyed Man working with Batman to get information. The scene is very creepy and surreal. Guillem March makes good use of white space here, like in the Looney Tunes. March excels at dynamic art, from Batman kicking thugs’ asses to Two-Face putting a few more bullets into a werewolf. No matter what happens, March brings an impact to the book.

Story-wise, this issue sets the table for a final showdown. It’s nice to see the heroes actually win, although it feels like some of these fights took place over multiple issues rather than individual scenes. Still, this is where the satisfying parts take place. This includes a big twist regarding the main villain, who changes his appearance in a way you won’t anticipate.

This issue also includes a backup issue by Dan Watters and Christopher Mitten called “Golden Child.” It’s about Talia al Ghul resurrecting a key character who will likely play a role in, or at least reappear in, this series’ finale. Watters does a good job of getting inside Talia’s head, right down to the final two captions that poetically sum up her feelings about the character’s resurrection. Mitten’s art style plays on the strangeness of the Lazarus Pits and their abilities.

Resolutions in fight scenes are the focus in Detective comics #1088, which builds to a final showdown in Ram V’s epic run. There are many satisfying moments as the heroes claim their victories and the sinister emerges.

At one point the Ten-Eyed Man steals the show.

Many fights that started in previous editions are finished here

March and Mitten give the book an old-school atmosphere

Backup has a nice ending, but feels drawn out

The main story reminds us that many of these battles have been going on for quite some time
