Delhi court reserves bail application of MP Engineer Rashid in terror financing case

New Delhi: A Delhi court on Wednesday reserved its decision on the bail plea of Lok Sabha MP Rashid Engineer, who is in jail in a terror financing case, and is likely to announce its decision on September 4. Sheikh Abdul Rashid, popularly known as Engineer Rashid, has filed a petition in the court seeking bail in the case.

Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Chander Jit Singh heard the arguments on the petition during a closed hearing and reserved his order.

The judge had sent a notice to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on August 20, directing it to file a response to his application by August 28.

On July 5, the court had granted Rashid parole to take oath of office after winning the Lok Sabha elections from Baramulla constituency in Jammu and Kashmir.

Rashid has been in jail since 2019 after being arrested by the NIA in 2017 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in connection with terror financing. He is lodged in Tihar Jail.

His name cropped up in the investigation of Kashmiri businessman Zahoor Watali, who was arrested by the NIA for allegedly funding terrorist groups and separatists in the Kashmir Valley. The NIA had filed charges against several people in the case, including Kashmiri separatist leader Yasin Malik, Lashkar-e-Taiba founder Hafiz Saeed and Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin.

Malik was sentenced to life imprisonment by a court in 2022 after pleading guilty to the charges.
