Eye color change: Study: The most dangerous cosmetic surgery

Well, that’s not good news.

Americans can’t get enough of cosmetic procedures, which increased 5% in 2023 over the previous year, according to a report from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

All surgeries carry risks, but one procedure has a shocking 92% chance of complications, according to new research.

Eye color change surgeries, which include cosmetic iris implants, laser pigment removal and keratopigmentation, top the list of the ten most dangerous cosmetic surgeries.

Researchers at online eyewear retailer Overnight Glasses say recovery times range from one to eight weeks and costs an average of $12,000, putting patients at risk of losing their eyesight.

Keratopigmentation, which is not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, uses a laser to create a tunnel in the cornea to place the color pigment.

A French company that trains ophthalmologists to perform keratopigmentation posted footage last year of a woman dyeing her brown eyes a bold, bright blue. The clip garnered nearly 30 million views on TikTok.

But experts have long warned about the complications of this Proceedingsincluding vision loss, blindness, glaucoma and uveitis or eye inflammation.

Dr. Colin McCannel, a professor of clinical ophthalmology at the University of California, Los Angeles, told Healthline that having “unnecessary eye surgery” is a “bad idea” because of the risk of complications.

Other potentially dangerous cosmetic procedures?

Second on the Overnight Glasses list is thigh lift surgery, which carries a 78 percent risk of complications such as blood clots, infections and changes in skin sensation.

The celebrity-favorite Brazilian Butt Lift came in third with a risk of 38%. Potential problems include fat cells entering the bloodstream and migrating to the lungs or brain, infections, nerve damage, swelling and scarring.

Last year, a woman on TikTok claimed she was “traumatized” by her BBL, comparing the feeling to being beaten up by 20 gorillas.
