Whoopi Goldberg rejects claim on “The View” that Kamala Harris is a “DEI employee”: “Women of color scare people”

Whoopi Goldberg defends Vice President Kamala Harris against attacks that threaten her in the course of her campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination. In today’s episode of The viewGoldberg has blasted conservative politicians like Rep. Tim Burchett who claim Harris was a “DEI hire.”

Goldberg began the segment by telling the audience that Republicans have “stepped up their attacks on the reasons she is unfit for service” and played a clip of Burchett telling CNN that Harris is “mediocre” and “100% … a DEI hire.”

(Editor’s note: The view is currently on hiatus; contrary to what you may have heard, The view was not canceled today. This article was originally published on July 23, 2024, when this episode first aired. The view will return with new episodes in September.)

In the clip, Burchett says: “First of all, (Joe Biden) says he’s going to hire a black woman as vice president. He just skipped over – what about white women? What about other groups?”

After the clip ended, Goldberg immediately refuted Burchett’s comments, saying, “(Biden) never said that. He said he was thinking about a woman. He never mentioned the color of her skin, he never said anything.”

In fact, President Biden said in early 2020 that he planned to select a female vice presidential candidate to complete his platform, but did not mention race or anything else. According to Politico, he said during a primary debate, “There are a number of women who would be qualified to be president.”

On today’s episode, Goldberg slammed Republicans for twisting the truth, saying, “When you attack people, try to do it on a factual basis. I know it’s almost crazy for you to think about it, but facts really do make a difference. People aren’t going to attack you if you’re accurate. They’re going to say you’re wrong, but you’re more than wrong.”

“You’re trying to send a little message about her being a woman of color. We all see that,” Goldberg continued. “We know what you’re doing. Stop it.”

When Joy Behar interjected, “Why are these white men so scared?” Goldberg exclaimed, “Because black women and women of color freak people out! I don’t know why!”

The view airs weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
